Mom accidentally smothers newborn son while heavily medicated, sues hospital for negligence
Ms Thompson is now suing the Portland hospital for $US 8.6 million ($10.9m AUD), claiming that it is at fault for the death of the infant.
That's because Thompson, who gave birth to a healthy boy on August 2, 2012, was on Ambien and Vicodin when hospital staff brought 4-day-old Jacob to nurse in the hospital bed with her, unsupervised, at 3am. Her suit alleges that the death was preventable and that she should have never been left alone in her condition with the newborn child.
Monica Thompson, 42, argues that she was still "groggy" from her C-section three days before her son Jacob was placed in her care at Portland Adventist Medical Center in OR on August 2, 2012.
Earlier that night she had been given "narcotic painkillers and sleep aids" by nurses at the Portland Adventist Medical Center in the state of OR, her lawsuit states.

The new mum tried to get a response from her son before frantically calling for a nurse.
"She poked him and talked to him with no reaction", reads the lawsuit.
Thompson found her child not breathing when she woke up, the lawsuit states. Jacob had suffered brain damage due to lack of oxygen and his parents had to turn off his life support because he was in an irreversible comatose state. The newborn suffocated under his mother after she fell asleep while nursing him.

Jacob wasn't breathing and was placed on life support.
Ms Thompson claims the hospital has "directly caused her severe emotional distress, severe depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, severe anxiety and prolonged grief disorder". About three hours earlier, Thompson, who had a Caesarean section, was given narcotic painkillers and sleep aids, the suit says. She's now suing the hospital for $8.8 million.
Thompson is asking for a jury trial.
