Naomi Watts' psychological thriller Gypsy has been canceled by Netflix after just one season.
The cancellation is said to have come as a surprise, as Gypsy writers had been working for almost a month on storylines for the forthcoming second season. Gypsy only lasted for a single season before earning the company's banhammer, something that perhaps isn't surprising given its relatively mild launch and mixed bag of reviews.
Released earlier this year, the series saw Watts in the role of New York City psychotherapist Jean Holloway; a woman who was so embedded within her clients' private lives that she would secretly infiltrate each of them, pulling the strings from the inside and using the alias Diane Hart during her time out of the office.
Viewer reception must have been similar - or just lacking overall - as Netflix has decided not to give the show another chance.
Gypsy isn't the only show that Netflix has killed off, though. The streaming service pulled the plug on Baz Luhrmann's expensive drama about the birth of hip-hop, "The Get Down", in late May, and did the same to "Girlboss" in June. But while Watts' intimate therapist isn't coming back to the streaming service after only one season, the gorgeous ladies of wrestling will be stepping back in the ring after their triumphant debut: Netflix has given the go-ahead for GLOW season 2.
The series also stars Bill Crudup (Spotlight) as Jean's husband Michael Halloway, Sophie Cookson (Kingsman) as Sidney, Lucy Boynton (Murder on the Orient Express) as Jean's patient Allison, and Karl Glusman (Nocturnal Animals) as Jean's patient Sam. Rubin, Watts, Liza Chasin and Rudd Simmons served as executive producers.
