The Caribeña papayas were recalled by the company on July 26. Nationally, one death has been linked to the outbreak, among 45 hospitalizations and 141 illnesses.

Centers for Disease Control said OH was one of three new states reporting this week, in an expanding outbreak that started earlier this month.

Maradol papayas are large, oval fruit weighing 3 pounds or more.

Forty-five people have been hospitalized and one person from New York City has died. They have green skin that turns yellow when ripe; inside, the fruit is salmon-colored.

Most people infected with the salmonella bacteria develop symptoms - including diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps - within 12 to 72 hours, health officials say.

Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 17, 2017 to July 27, 2017.

Illnesses that occurred after July 14, 2017, might not be reported yet due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported. Ill people range in age from less than 1 year to 95, with a median age of 39.

The Maryland Department of Health first informed federal authorities that several ill people had purchased papayas at the same Baltimore location.

The deadly Salmonella outbreak that has been traced to maradol papayas from Mexico is spreading, with 32 more victims confirmed in the past week and three more states reporting illnesses.

Laboratory test indicate that Maradol papayas from the Carica de Campeche farm in Mexico are the likely source of this multistate outbreak. "We share their concern, but we also want to provide as much information as possible so that shoppers can make an educated decision when buying papayas", Melissa Hartmann de Barros, director of communications, said in a news release.

The CDC had recommended earlier this month that people not eat any yellow maradol papayas from Mexico but has since changed that to recommend against eating yellow maradol papayas marketed under the Caribeña, Civa and Valery brands.

HLB Specialties, a United States papaya importer, released a statement Friday that emphasized the differences between brands, varieties and countries of origin. When in doubt, don't eat it; just throw it out.
