Here's where the clearest skies will be during the total solar eclipse
13 August 2017, 07:25 | Glen Norman
A full solar eclipse in America means lots of things. Almost every hotel room in the eclipse path is booked, which is expected to contribute to heavy - and possibly distracted - traffic on Interstate 5 and other highways throughout the morning.
Eclipse Safari offers the NASA live stream of the Eclipse and a Twitter feed with the latest eclipse related tweets.
Solar eclipse glasses have especially dark lenses and block out more light than traditional sunglasses.
As always, safety comes first when viewing an eclipse. Depending on how long you gazed at the sun and how badly the retinal cells were damaged, this spot will either fade away in time or remain permanent. We have had nine total eclipses in the USA, most with short paths, for the entire 20th Century and it's been about a century since the last coast to coast total solar eclipse in 1918. On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States all the way from OR to SC.
To take images as the moon covers the sun, you'll need to use a special solar filter to protect your camera, just as you'll need a pair of eclipse glasses to protect your eyes.
There are usually six or seven total solar eclipses per decade, somewhere in the world.
It might seem unusual that the moon is able to cover the sun because it's 400 times smaller.
Science Central's gift shop is selling solar eclipse viewing cards for $1.99 each to the public and for $1 each for Science Central members. Not only do they sell solar eclipse glasses, they also have an assortment of camera filters and telescopes to make viewing the eclipse the best it can be.
There are many kinds of solar eclipses. Corvalis, Albany and Lebanon, Oregon will experience the mid-eclipse times at 10:17 a.m. local time, with peak times in Columbia, South Carolina occurring at 2:43 p.m.
We don't see a total solar eclipse with every new moon because there are other stipulations, too.
Why don't they happen more often? However, as totality is ending, there's a flash of sunlight when the moon moves off the sun.
The path of totality (where the sun is completely obscured) entered just above Portland, Ore.; passed through Denver, Colo. before exiting off the east coast of Central Florida.
On August 21, cities across the country such as Salem, Oregon, and Carbondale, Illinois, will plunge into total darkness for about two minutes. Commencing at 10:15 a.m. PDT (1:15 p.m. EDT), a lunar shadow 73 miles wide will take one hour and 33 minutes to travel from OR on the west coast to SC on the east, allowing continuous observation for 90 minutes.
The USA TODAY Network will be covering the eclipse in full force on August 21, from OR through SC, so stick with us for the latest.
What if I Miss It?
If you can't make this month's eclipse, you're going to have to wait seven years.
But the total eclipse, when the sun passes behind the moon, will be fleeting.
