GETTYDonald Trump said North Korea would face'fire and fury the likes of which the world has never seen
Rep. Keith Ellison (D., Minn.) quickly walked back remarks he made Friday that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un was acting "more responsible" than President Donald Trump, saying it was "tailor-made for somebody to misuse".
On Wednesday, North Korea announced that a plan to attack Guam would be complete by mid-August. "Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!" And what I'm telling you is once you start seeing missile launches, you're going to see-the time for cranking up the anti-war machine is right now.
Engel suggested using "behind-the-scenes, quiet" diplomacy in order to solve the crisis with North Korea.
Upon leaving the panel, Ellison sought to do damage control, telling The Washington Post's Dave Weigel that he wished he had not made the remark.
"So between that and Trump's promise to unleash fire and fury at North Korea, you could be forgiven for your confusion about whether you're listening to the fictional Daenerys Targaryen on "Game of Thrones" or the very real President of the United States".
"I think that the president unfortunately has elevated [North Korean Supreme Leader] Kim Jong-Un now", McCaskill told the crowd, according to the Daily Journal Online.
"I know people say the rhetoric wasn't stopping the advancement of their weapons, but we're tracking it and we have the technology to intercept", McCaskill said Friday. "What we need is someone bringing calm to the situation, not spiking it".
Trump continued to ramp up the rhetoric with a post on Twitter this morning indicating that the U.S.is prepared to take military action against North Korea. Michael Ahrens, the RNC's rapid-response director, sent the video of Ellison's comment to reporters, calling it "insane" and and challenging Democrats to respond.
