Sifiso Lungelo Thabete's attempt to entertain the audience went horribly wrong when he failed to rotate far enough and landed on his head, which resulted in breaking his neck. In a video filmed by onlookers, the bodybuilder can be seen being introduced and entertaining the crowd by waving his hands above his head. Wearing a black Speedo and socks, the champion walks on stage and attempts to do perform the backflip, while the crowd cheers him on.
Anxious officials raced toward the former junior world champion as he remained motionless, but it seemed too late.
In a brief tribute to Thabete the magazine said: "The bodybuilding community was shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the death of Sifiso Lungelo Thabete, a bodybuilder from Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal, at the weekend".
