Trump Raises Military Option in Response to Venezuela Crisis

President Donald Trump said Friday that he would not rule out a U.S.

In response, the White House said Mr Trump would gladly speak to his Venezuelan counterpart, when democracy had been restored in the country. You know we're all over the world, and we have troops all over the world, some that are very, very far away.

Maduro asked the Venezuelan Foreign Minister to contact the USA authorities to arrange a telephone conversation or a meeting with President Trump, informs France 24.

Peru said on Friday it was expelling Venezuela's ambassador to Peru to protest the country's recent formation of an all-powerful constituent assembly that has been widely condemned as a power grab by socialist President Nicolas Maduro.

"The United States stands with the people of Venezuela in the face of their continued oppression by the Maduro regime", she added.

On Thursday, Maduro reportedly instructed his foreign minister, Jorge Arreaza, to arrange a phone call or meeting with Trump.

Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino has described United States President Donald Trump's warning of a possible military action as a "crazy act" by an "extremist elite".

Questions over how seriously to take the threat underscore the unusual nature of the Trump presidency.

The remarks come a day after the Trump administration slapped new sanctions on eight of Venezuela's politicians and security figures.

Trump declined to give more details about the possibility of USA forces leading an operation in Venezuela.

"I'm not going to rule out a military option", Trump said.

Maduro and his government have faced growing opposition from the USA and major Latin American nations over the controversial legislative superbody, which sparked months of deadly protests across the country.

The 6 August incident raised tensions in the divided country, where critics of President Maduro say he is trying to cement a dictatorship. Normally, such a declaration by a United States president would spark extended debate and command the world's full attention.

Late last month, despite nationwide strikes and demonstrations, Maduro pushed through a vote on a new constituent assembly that replaced the opposition-majority parliament and increased his power.
