Venezuela calls US President Donald Trump military threat 'craziness'

As if the threat of a war with North Korea isn't enough, US President Trump, said on Friday that he is not discarding the "military option" against the regime of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, reported dpa news.

These follow last month's U.S. sanctions on Venezuela over the election of a loyalist legislative superbody that has the power to rewrite the constitution, which Washington called "illegitimate" and in service of a "dictator". The election of the assembly, decried by the opposition as an attempt by Maduro to install a "communist dictatorship", sharply increased tensions between Caracas and Washington.

"Venezuela rejects in the most categorical and convincing manner the unfriendly and hostile statements by US President Donald Trump... in which he threatens a military invasion against our homeland", Arreaza told broadcaster Venezuelana de Televisión.

The remarks come as Maduro has convened a constituent assembly, in an election widely denounced by global observers, to amend the country's constitution to cement his grip on power.

McMaster told broadcaster MSNBC, "You've seen Maduro have some lame attempts to try to do that already", adding that it was important for the United States and its neighbors to speak with a single voice in defense of Venezuela's democracy.

Vice President Pence leaves next week on a trip to South America, where he will visit Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Panama.

Washington has slapped sanctions on President Nicolas Maduro and said he is ruling like a "dictator" trying to crush the opposition. "We have many options for Venezuela", he said.

Bolivian President Evo Morales also condemned on Saturday the "armed interventionist eagerness by the United States against Venezuela", slamming the worldwide community for keeping silent.

"But we will see what happens", Trump said. "He is the one who has caused it, and he's the one who's perpetuating it".

"Venezuela is a mess", said Trump, in an appearance before reporters with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley at his New Jersey golf club.

He adds that it's "certainly something that we could pursue".

On Thursday, Maduro referenced Trump during an address to the Venezuelan constitutional assembly, inviting a dialogue with the American leader.
