White nationalist rally in Virginia sparks violent clashes, emergency declaration

Torch-bearing white nationalists march on UVA

"The hate and violence that has occurred in Virginia is despicable".

In the afternoon, a silver sedan driving at high speed plowed into the crowd before reversing along the same street.

Hundreds of people chanted, threw punches, hurled water bottles and unleashed chemical sprays. No one on the ground was injured, law-enforcement officials say.

A vehicle that plowed into a group of people Saturday afternoon after crowds dispersed in Charlottesville has OH plates.

Authorities had declared a state of emergency in the city as they struggled to cope with repeated violent clashes involving the far right. This can be compared to the many instances we've seen online of black people protesting and having to face off against swarms of police, many in riot gear and willing to get physical with anyone.

- April 29: Members of the Traditionalist Workers Party, the National Socialist Movement and other groups engage in shouting matches with counter-demonstrators in Pikeville, Kentucky.

The protest was sparked by the state's decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

"These were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism".

The S&P 500 Index closed 1.5 percent lower, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.1 percent and the Dow Jones Composite fell 1.4 percent. Computer hardware stocks rebounded following recent weakness, with the NYSE Arca Computer Hardware Index climbing by 1.4 percent.

Kessler said this week that the rally is partly about the removal of Confederate symbols but also about free speech and "advocating for white people". Nineteen others were injured in the crash.

The Virginia State Police posted videos on Facebook of officers breaking up the Unite the Right gathering and counterprotest.

Police instituted road closures around downtown, and many businesses in the popular open-air shopping mall opted to close for the day.

A witness who filmed the auto crash said he saw the vehicle build up speed before ramming the crowd. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Virginia and Rutherford Institute, filed an injunction early Friday, demanding that the rally continue as planned and won. University police arrested one person who was charged with assault and disorderly conduct, a university statement Saturday said.

Mr. Trump said he spoke with Gov. Terry McAuliffe over the phone and agreed "that the hate and division must stop and it must stop right now". "So I don't know, did he endorse me or what's going on". He urged Trump - via Twitter - to "take a good look in the mirror & remember it was White Americans who put you in the presidency, not radical leftists". We love our god, our flag.

A new Japanese poster for Justice League has surfaced online. "I guess you'd call him kind of inward, you know?". Here are a few instances where we've seen glimpses of the Flying Fox in the trailers so far...

The city announced earlier this week that the rally must be moved out of Emancipation Park to a larger one, citing safety reasons.
