Trump Adviser Says Military Option Not Preferred for North Korea

"We will defend our people and our civilization from all who dare to threaten our way of life", Trump said at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Friday after Pyongyang conducted its longest-ever test flight of a ballistic missile.

President Donald Trump's national security adviser says the USA has a military option for North Korea, but that is not its preferred route. "This includes the regime of North Korea, which has once again shown its utter contempt for its neighbors and for the entire world community".

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Friday on Twitter, "North Korea's missile launch is another reckless breach of United Nations resolutions - a major threat to worldwide peace and security which demands a global response".

"For those who have said and have been commenting about the lack of a military option, there is a military option", he insisted. "Now, it's not what we would prefer to do". According to the state-run KCNA news agency, leader Kim Jong-un said: "Our goal is to make the rulers of the USA dare not talk about military option regarding us".

Yoshihide Suga, Japan's chief cabinet secretary, said "We absolutely can not accept these repeated provocations by North Korea and we strongly protest to North Korea and convey to them the nation's strong anger in the strongest words possible". "And at that point there is not a whole lot the security council is going to be able to do from here when you have cut 90% of the trade and 30% of the oil", she said.

One former top Trump adviser has said the U.S.is bluffing when it threatens military force against North Korea. "There's no military solution here, they got us".

At the time, multiple other White House officials looked to refute Bannon's view.

Mattis agreed, saying at the time that "there are strong military consequences if the DPRK initiates hostilities". And there's little sign that talks involving the U.S., North Korea and other interested countries can be arranged amid the nearly weekly barrage of weapons tests and threats, let alone stop the North's determined nuclear march.

A North Korean state agency threatened on Thursday to use nuclear weapons to "sink" Japan and reduce the United States to "ashes and darkness" for supporting a U.N. Security Council resolution and sanctions over its latest nuclear test.

On Friday, the U.N. Security Council condemned North Korea's "highly provocative" test of an intermediate-range missile, which hurtled over USA ally Japan into the northern Pacific Ocean.

The South Korean military responded to the provocation from the North by launching a Hyunmoo-II missile into the sea that traveled the distance it would take to reach the Sunan airfield in Pyongyang, according to a military spokesman.
