Congress to launch nationwide agitation against high tax on petrol

Ajay Maken Congress spokesperson

Maken said on August 2, 2017, the BJP Government chose to increase the dealer commission on petrol by Re 1 per litre and on diesel 72 paise per litre, the cost of which was passed on to the consumers. The main Opposition party alleged that the government was profiteering at the expense of the common man.

Fearing the three-year high in the prices of these fuels, consumers believe that the concept of market-determined rates was tampered with by frequent tax hikes when the crude oil prices fell steeply and are ruling at exactly half the level of Dollars 107 per barrel in May 2014, even after rising in the last three months. The Congress is planning a countrywide agitation from September 20 against heavy taxes on the fuel.

CPI (M) mouthpiece People's Democracy, criticising frequent fuel price hikes, has questioned the way the government is spending "windfall gains" made by eleven hikes in excise duty in last three years.
