Ironically, when Harvey hit, Trump proclaimed on Twitter that it "looks like largest ever (storm) recorded in the Atlantic" and that "many people" were saying it "is the worst storm/hurricane they have ever seen".
President Trump visited hurricane-scarred Florida on Thursday, where he met with state officials and visited areas recovering from the storm, passing out food to survivors, shaking hands and posing for pictures.
What do you think of Melania Trump's dress?
Melania Trump turned up the glamour dial to maximum for a black-tie do at the White House.
"It's a team like very few people have seen", Trump said, referring to Florida Gov. Rick Scott, Sen.
Trump tweeted that he wanted to "meet with our great Coast Guard, FEMA and numerous courageous first responders".
Trump said, turning to the cameras.
Afterward, the White House was mainly pleased with the trip, though some aides grumbled that he'd missed an opportunity to show more compassion as hundreds of thousands of Americans faced uncertain futures. But even then, there were some discordant moments, like when he urged relief workers to "have a good time" in Houston.
Trump, standing alongside Scott and other Florida officials, said he knows that "at a certain point it ends for you and we can't let it end".
The president couldn't resist injecting a political flavor into his visit, telling reporters in Fort Myers that he was hopeful that Scott, a two-term Republican, would run for the Senate, where Democrat Bill Nelson is up for re-election next year. "We are there for you 100 percent", he said, adding, "this is a state that I know very well. So I hope he runs for the Senate", Trump said.
Mainly, however, he sought to highlight the work of federal, state and local agencies, which have received praise for their coordination amid trying circumstances.
FEMA also said it had moved 3.8 million meals and 3.4 million liters of water to states in the Southeast that were affected by the storm.
The death toll includes eight elderly people who died after being exposed to sweltering heat inside a nursing home north of Miami that had been left with little or no air conditioning after the hurricane struck.
In Florida, some 2.69 million homes and businesses were still without power on Thursday, or about 1 in 4 Florida customers.
