COLUMN: Tropical storm Harvey ignites the climate change debate
This year's activity is high - but not unusual.
When asked about the contribution of climate change to recent natural disasters, such as the hurricanes that impacted parts of Texas and Louisiana, 61 percent of voters - including 52 percent of GOP voters - said the changing climate had at least some impact, while 21 percent believed it had little or no impact; another 18 percent of voters did not know or had no opinion. "It's a situation where these multiple cyclones had very high impacts, which brings a lot of attention to these types of events".
On Sunday night the CBS program "60 Minutes" aired a segment about a group of scientists in the Arctic struggling with melting ice that has caused them to relocate their base site. Over the past 10 to 15 years, our economy has grown while, for the first time since the dawn of the industrial revolution, greenhouse gas emissions have dropped.
It's embarrassing enough that President Donald Trump has installed a unrepentant climate-denier to run one of the most critical American agencies needed to address global warming. "Our forecasted number for hurricanes was 11; the average from the four other centers was less than seven". But the problem with the climate change debate is that the topic has become intensely political. The first of those six hurricanes was after the peak of the season began August 1.
While the continental US has been fortunate in not having the damaging landfall every year of a major hurricane, that does not imply that in those years in which there was no USA landfall that such storms did not occur. Just three, for example, have caused well over half of all storm-related deaths in the U.S. since 1900. He is claiming, essentially, that on our planet there have been no major hurricanes since 2005. Hurricane Jose has been on the nation's radar, but is unlikely to cause the same damage as Irma and Harvey, according toUSA Today and AccuWeather meteorologist Evan Duffey. Hurricane Katia, which formed in the Bay of Campeche, looped around and made landfall in southern Mexico on September 9.
The liberal "Politico Magazine" attributed a climate scientist's conclusion, on the very day Harvey hit the Texas Coast, that the storm was decades in the making. Even after it made landfall and weakened to a tropical storm, Harvey continued to dump record amounts of rain on the region.
Those four hurricanes were preceded by Hurricane Franklin, which made landfall on August 10 as a Category 1 hurricane in Veracruz, Mexico, and Hurricane Gert, a Category 2 hurricane that remained well off the East Coast of the USA from August 13-17. All of the floods over the last 30 years featured much less flooding than Harvey. While the event was rare, it isn't unprecedented.
While my mother's memory is never far away, this hurricane carrying her name was, if nothing else, timely.
The only people who refuse to confront these undeniable shifts are the politicians who would rather shut their eyes and stuff waterlogged muck in their ears. It was I-J-K. And 1998 was I-J-K-L.
That doesn't mean things won't change, but it requires organizing, political activism, and perseverance-a storm, no matter how vicious, will not change the politics on its own. The frequency of these mega storms is increasing every year.
An El Nino that was expected to combat strengthening tropical systems had not developed as of early August, according to the NOAA. Storms are formed over the oceans by the warming of their surfaces. That's been fairly weak, which is good for hurricanes. We all stand together. It has happened before.
Fowles said he believes the US government may spend at least $15 billion in hurricane aid.
At Least 8 Dead After Nursing Home Loses AC Following Irma
But with no family in the area and with neighbors who were gone or unwilling to help, the NY native felt cut off from the world. Nursing home officials said they told Scott they needed "immediate assistance", but did not hear back from the governor.
The hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so it is far from over.
Beyond Florida, the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the U. S. He pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Accord earlier this year and has repeatedly said that environmental regulations are against the interests of the working people.
David Flandro, head of global analytics at JLT Re, said Harvey's unusual path would make the reinsurance industry rethink its ability to correctly predict the paths of future storms. "We have done well in the past".
And finally, it's pretty impractical to think that we could attack weak tropical waves or depressions before they have a chance to grow into hurricanes.
But we all should be talking and planning further ahead.
South East governors proscribe IPOB activities
The meeting also reiterated their earlier position that the November 18, 2017 governorship election in Anambra must hold. Reading a communiqué after the meeting, Umahi said, "All activities of IPOB are hereby proscribed ".
