The $249.99 second-generation Oasis is also less expensive than its predecessor, which was priced at $289.99 when it launched previous year.
The Oasis' big new feature, however, is the ability to play your Audible titles via Bluetooth and, if you own both ebook and audiobook editions, you can switch between them, picking up on one where you left off on the other.
The resolution of the e-paper display is the same at 300 ppi, but it has a couple extra LED lights now for a brighter, more even-looking display. A bigger panel gives you more space for the text and it does make reading easier on the eyes.
The retail giant unveiled its revamped Kindle Oasis on Wednesday that's cheaper than the previous version, is waterproof, and has a bigger display.
That 7-inch screen is good for 30 per cent more words per page, says Amazon - or it means larger text for better viewability overall.
(Calling last year's model Oasis when it wasn't waterproofed, or even water-resistantis nearly insulting to Amazon's customers.) The new e-reader has been tested in two meters of water for up to 60 minutes. It's a device made explicitly for one-handed use, and we dug how it was put together past year.
Amazon says the new model trades last year's plastic for a mostly aluminum finish, though, so it may feel a little more premium. At it's thinnest point it measures an impressive 3.4mm. The new Kindle Oasis sports the same asymmetric shape, with a thicker-edged grip down one side, housing a battery compartment that keeps the reader alive for weeks at a time. Older Oasis covers will not work with the new device.
In fact, my opinion at the time was that Amazon had, in the original Oasis, achieved something close to perfection in e-reader form.
If you're also planning to use the Oasis for your audiobooks, it's likely you'll want the larger 32GB version to ensure you have enough room for all of your titles.
Kindle Oasis 2 vs Oasis: Should you upgrade? It didn't specify a standard, noting only that the device will charge from empty to full within two hours.
With no battery case, Amazon has taken the liberty to roll out a few new options.
Amazon has announced a new version of the Kindle Oasis as it looks to make this flagship reader the most accomplished Kindle so far. The less expensive Kindle Voyage had an ambient light sensor, but it was oddly missing on the 1st-gen Oasis - Amazon has rectified that here, adding twin sensors that automatically raise and lower the light brightness to suit your surroundings.
Kindles have come a long way since the Kindle 1 arrived back in November 2007. There's still no support for open-source EPUB files, and the company's Alexa assistant is still nowhere to be found, but Amazon's e-book platform remains massive either way. Amazon said it made it water-resistant because customers like to use Kindles while in the bathtub.
Prices start at £229.99 for the 8GB model, raising to £259.99 for the 32GB model, and £319.99 for the 32GB model with unlimited, lifetime, cellular connectivity.
People can pre-order the new Kindles online now, and the devices will ship on October 31.
