Amazon Offers Students Prime for $5.49 a Month
12 October 2017, 03:47 | Casey Mitchell
The company announced today that kids ages 13-17 will be able to use an Amazon Household account to shop Amazon's online marketplace - with limited independence, of course. Or if you want to give your kids a little more autonomy, Amazon allows you to skip the approval step and simply set a spending limit. Teens can also be assigned pre-set spending limits per order as an alternative to having orders reviewed. Then again, if you'd rather spend that money on cheap fast food you can always cancel your monthly subscription and mooch off your parents' Prime account over summer break. The teen can also add a note to their parents. If the parents subscribe to Amazon Prime, the teens will receive access to Prime-exclusive features like Prime Video and Twitch as well.
"Our new monthly payment option lets students enjoy the best of Amazon in a more flexible and simple way", said Ellen Kinney, Director of Prime Student, Amazon.
The parent and child each get their own Amazon account, however, the parent has the control over which payment methods and shipping addresses can be used by the child. Parents will get a text or email notification with the information about the order, which will include an option to approve or decline the order.
While teens' orders through the new system are tied to a shared credit card for the family, it's likely that, in many cases, teens will be paying for those purchases themselves by giving mom or dad cash back at home. And from a customer data perspective, Prime Student memberships will open up a world of possibilities in terms of targeted ads, product promotion, and more.
