In 2011, the 2,581 people with no religion comprised 3.2% of the county's population. Dublin city and suburbs had the largest number of Irish Travellers with 5,089 persons. However, this was down from 117,721 persons five years previously.
The number of Catholics in the Republic of Ireland fell by over 130,000 between 2011 and 2016, according to the latest Census data. They made up fewer than 1 in 100 (0.7%) of the county's population, which was the same as at national level.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) today published Census 2016 Profile 8 Irish Travellers, Ethnicity and Religion.
The figures show that the Irish Travellers' population (30,987) has risen by 5.1 percent since 2011.
There were more male (661) than female (642) Travellers. Figures from the council show there has been a year-on-year percentage increase in the number of families now sharing accommodation, as well as those on the roadside.

The number of those without religion was highest in Dundalk No 3 Urban where there were 330 people in this category, comprising 19.3% of the population of the electoral division.
The next largest grouping - "Any Other White background" accounted for 11,162 persons (8.7%), a decline of 32.
The average overall age of members was 40.3 years, almost three years above the average for the general population.
