Pakistan rescues North American family of five from 'terrorists'

Pak Army recovers five Western hostages

A Pakistan military statement said that based on "actionable intelligence from USA", the rescue operation was conducted in the Kurram tribal region near the Afghan border on Wednesday.

Canadian Joshua Boyle and American Caitlan Coleman, who were kidnapped in Afghanistan in 2012. The couple had three children while in captivity.

An Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said the hostages were a Canadian, his American wife, and their three children.

The rescued hostages "are being repatriated to their country of origin", it added.

"They were captured by terrorists from Afghanistan in 2012 and kept as hostages there", the ISPR handout said. They want money, power and friends. A video released by the Taliban a year ago had showed the family, including two young boys.

"We welcome media reports that a family including USA citizens has been released from captivity", a United States embassy spokesman in Islamabad told AFP, without confirming the identity of the released hostages.
