In a statement announcing the transition to only electric cars in Paris, officials made sure to clarify that the removal of all other types of cars by 2030 should not be interpreted as a ban but a "trajectory". Paris has already begun to fast-track this process by trying to simply keep cars out.

So Paris decision took 10 years back. Parts of the city have "no-car zones", and the city even hosts an entire day when cars aren't permitted within the 40-square-mile area that Paris covers.

Hidalgo has been seeking to reduce pollution with a series of measures.

A study carried out by an air quality monitoring group said Monday the move had had a limited impact on air quality. New owners can claim €6,000 ($7,100 USD) if purchasing an electric auto, or further increase their incentives to €10,000 ($11,800 USD) should they also arrange to have their old diesel vehicle scrapped alongside the purchase. Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot has said he wants to banish from France all fossil fuel cars by 2040.
