Dias: GM's plans to produce Equinox in Mexico 'war on Canada'

13 October 2017, 12:35 | Hattie Nash

The company reportedly made the announcement this week to its union, which represents 3,000 workers. However, GM suggests that could change if Unifor doesn't throw in the towel soon.

"If Jerry is concerned about losing automotive jobs to Mexico, I think he's just adding to that situation by making it hard for General Motors to work with Unifor in Canada".

Jerry Dias, the president of the Canadian auto union, says that General Motors has declared war on Canadian workers with its threat to move production to Mexico.

Third arrest made in beating of black man at Virginia rally
CBS19 reports that Charlottesville Police Department detained Harris after he turned himself in at 8:30 a.m. Harris is expected to appear in Charlottesville General District Court on Friday, Oct. 13.

"If they think they can declare war on Canada and we are going to sit back and let it happen, they are drastically fooling themselves".

The union reports in a statement that GM halted production of the Terrain in Ingersoll, Ontario and that 100 percent of its production is now based in Mexico. Both sides refuse to budge on the demand of job security at the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ont., which assembles GM's Chevrolet Equinox sport utility vehicle.

In a Facebook post after the strike began, Dias observed that if you want to see what a NAFTA-caused race to the bottom looks like, go to Ingersoll, Ontario.

Unifor Local 88 at CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, Ontario and some 2,500 employees went on strike at 10:59 p.m. September 17 with the goal of having GM make their plant the main producer of the Chevrolet Equinox and job security.

He said General Motors is taking advantage of the low pay scales for Mexican workers at the expense of higher-paid workers in the United States and Canada, as permitted by the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"The members of Unifor Local 88 have asked General Motors for assurance that the plant, which has won many awards for the quality of their work, will continue to be the lead producer of the top-selling Equinox for the duration of their new agreement", he said.
