Considering the popularity of Stories on Instagram, Facebook Stories has not been that popular and this may have contributed to the company's has chose to streamline its Stories section. If you upload them in one app, they are visible in the other app.
As it continues to try to grow its Snapchat competitor, Facebook today announced that it is launching support for Stories in Groups and Events.
What this means is that the Stories you see in the main Facebook app are the same ones that you see in the Messenger app. According to TechCrunch, Facebook and Messenger will maintain their individual identities by continuing to segregate camera features.

The changes to Facebook Stories comes at a critical point for the company: Snapchat is expected to unveil a major overhaul of its app sometime soon to make the design a lot less confusing, and there's a decent chance of Snap succeeding at bringing its dying chatting app back to life.
I think it's only a matter of time before Facebook gives users the option to sync Stories across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and maybe even WhatsApp.
Update: This post has been updated to clarify Stories from Groups, Events and Pages will not be available in Messenger. The company says this will make it easier for users to share content across both services, while also noting that some people were already under the impression that stories posted to Messenger were also posted to Facebook.
Facebook also announced today that it's replacing its Messenger Day feature with Facebook Stories, allowing for cross posts between Messenger and the normal Facebook application.
