Internationally, the day is celebrated as World Diabetes Day. Soennecken, who was the son of a blacksmith, has several inventions to his credit.
German scientist Friedrich Soennecken filed a patent for the hole puncher on November 14, 1886.
It its ode to the hole puncher, Google calls the tool "an understated, but essential artefact of German engineering", a device that produces "crisp, identical holes", "creating a calming sense of unity among an otherwise unbound pile of loose leaf".
The doodle shows the Google logo made up of colourful paper circles - all except the second "g" which is replaced by a blue sheet of paper.
The hole puncher, originally created to help organise large stacks of paper, was later used in industries and shops dealing with various materials such as leather, clothing, metal, and plastic. The speciality of this invention is that its basic design has not changed in over 129 years.
From being a stress relief tool to acting as a paperweight, the hole puncher remains a part of the work place even as offices are moving towards a paperless workplace.
