Iraq's Kurdistan to Respect Court Ruling Banning Secession

Iraqi Kurds Pledge to Respect Court Ruling Banning Secession
The Baghdad government responded to the Kurdish independence referendum by swiftly seizing the Kurdish-held city of Kirkuk and other territory disputed between the Kurds and the central government.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), based in Erbil, said in a statement it would respect the Federal Supreme Court's ruling on November 6.
Israel was the only country supporting the independence referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Dialogue between the two sides will be implemented through the Iraqi constitution in a way that "guarantees all rights, authorities and status, since this is the only way to secure the unity of Iraq", it said.
Last week, Iraq's Supreme Federal Court ruled that the country's constitution does not allow for the secession of any part of the country from the Iraqi state.
One of the decisions, approved by the Parliament in a session, but boycotted by Kurdish MPs, on September 27, was mandating the government to summon the ambassadors and representatives of countries having offices in the Kurdistan Region to either close their offices or move them to outside the Region's governorates.
The referendum was also opposed by Turkey and Iran, who urged Kurdish officials to call it off.
USA president Donald Trump's special envoy to the anti-ISIL coalition, Brett McGurk, on Tuesday praised Erbil's efforts in trying to resolve the dispute.
The US has backed Kurdish forces fighting ISIL in both Iraq and Syria.
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, seeking to up the pressure in a stand-off with Iraq's Kurdish region, said on Tuesday he would act soon over border areas under Kurdish control but predicted his government's forces would regain them without violence.
The statement is seen as the latest efforts by KRG to start a dialogue with Baghdad that can lead to a peaceful breakaway.
