At a ministerial summit on education, Buhari said it's a very serious situation when teachers can not pass the exams they're supposed to teach.
Minister of education Adamu Adamu who identified poor funding as the bane of Nigeria's educational development disclosed that the sector needs an annual budgetary allocation of four point two trillion naira to turn around the fortunes of the sector.
He said the national conversation was aimed at refocusing the education sector not only to overcome the numerous challenges, but also to strengthen the Ministerial Strategic Plan that has already been developed by the ministry.
The minister noted that for education to be revived in Nigeria, the government should consider special incentives such as scholarships and automatic employment for education graduates. I know how fastidious many of us are.
"If we give regulatory agencies the teeth to bite and do their work, mediocre teachers will soon disappear from our classrooms".
The minister, who advocated for declaration of state of emergency in education, maintained that all change must begin with education, because, "if we get education right, other areas of our national life will be right and they will fall in line".
Speaking at the retreat, President Buhari pledged the commitment of his administration to revamping the sector.
Buhari said the summit was crucial to his administration's desire to improve the lot of Nigerians through the provision of quality and functional education for all, at all levels.
