Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday presented two Indian rice seed varieties to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) gene bank in Los Banos near the Philippines capital of Manila.
The IRRI, which has offices in 17 countries, is known for its work in developing rice varieties that contributed to the Green Revolution of the 1960s.
He also inaugurated a "rice field laboratory" named after him at the institute.
Prime Minister along with the Director General of the foundation, Dr. Matthew Morell also unveiled a plaque to officially mark the launch.

Jena, a Principal Scientist at IRRI's Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Biotechnology Division, elaborated about the benefits of the rice varieties which offer great potential to grow rice on nearly 7 million hectares of salt-affected areas in India.
Raveesh Kumar, a spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry, said the IRRI has successfully collaborated with the Indian Council for Agricultural Research to introduce drought-tolerant, flood-tolerant and salt-tolerant varieties of rice in India. The IRRI centre in Varanasi will help in utilising the rich biodiversity of India to develop special rice varieties.
