Worth almost $50 billion at list prices, the deal is a major rebound for Airbus, which has significantly lagged its US arch rival Boeing in orders this year.

A spokesman for Airbus declined to comment, as did Indigo says Bloomberg.

Even with a massive haul from Indigo, Airbus may not be done at the Dubai event.

The umbrella deal is created to supply aircaft to four airlines in which Franke's Indigo Partners investment company has stakes: USA -based Frontier Airlines, Mexico´s Volaris, Chilean carrier JetSmart and Hungary's Wizz.

In a statement, the Hungarian LCC said that while deliveries will start in 2022, the bulk of this order's aircraft will be delivered in 2025 and 2026, following on from the delivery of the 110 Airbus A321neo aircraft ordered by Wizz Air in 2015. The A320 is the most successful plane model of Airbus which competes with Boeing's 737.

The stunning magnitude of the deal - which Airbus called its "largest single commercial announcement ever" - caught many in the aviation industry by surprise. Indian low-priced airline IndiGo (which isn't connected to Indigo Partners) bought 250 Airbus jets in 2015.

This comprises 273 A320neos and 157 A321neos, valued at $49.5 billion at list prices.
