Diamondbacks' Torey Lovullo wins NL Manager of the Year
15 November 2017, 02:25 | Henrietta Morgan
Torey Lovullo and Paul Molitor won the 2017 Manager of the Year awards. More
In his first year as a manager, he helped lead the Diamondbacks to a 93-69 record, good enough to earn home field advantage in the Wild Card game, where they defeated the Rockies to advance into the NLDS. Frank Robinson, who was named AL manager of the year in 1989, is the only other Hall of Fame player to win the award.
Lovullo (111 points) received 18 of the 30 first-place votes to easily outdistance Dave Roberts (55) of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Bud Black (43) of the Colorado Rockies.
Francona, who won the award a year ago, led the Indians to an AL-best 102-62 record and an American League record 22 wins in a row.
On Tuesday, Diamondbacks skipper Torey Lovullo was named National League Manager of the Year for 2017. He's the first Twins manager to win the award since Ron Gardenhire in 2010 and the third in franchise history (Tom Kelly, 1991). "An award like this reflects the work of the organization and everyone who contributed to the Twins having a turnaround season".
Lovullo won the honor in voting by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. They beat Colorado in the NL wild-card game before getting swept by the Dodgers in the Division Series.
The 61-year-old Molitor was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, and got the last of his 3,319 career hits with the Twins in 1998.
Molitor's victory was closer than that of the National League, as he received 18 first-place votes in comparison to the 11 that Cleveland Indianas skipper Terry Francona received. Voting was completed before the start of the playoffs. Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch received the only other first-place vote and finished third.
