UC Browser app vanishes from Play Store following privacy concerns

15 November 2017, 08:10 | Casey Mitchell

UC Browser has mysteriously disappeared from the Google Play Store

Hundreds of Android apps might be removed from the Google Play ...

Three mobile applications developed by Information Technology and Computer Science students of the University of the Cordilleras qualified for the national semi-finals of the 2017 Android Masters competition by Google Developer Group Philippines.

If you have been a long time Android user or even a recent user, there is a good chance you've heard about UC Browser.

The security firm found several apps that took advantage of this vulnerability on the Play Store, with Google removing them after being informed. The browser is known for its data compression features, which allow users to access maximum content without having to worry about mobile data consumption.

UCWeb has also claimed that Indian users make up 100 million of its total monthly active users from around the world, with the latter figure reportedly reaching 420 million, per reports from 2016.

UC Browser has over 500 million downloads, and is a popular alternative to Chrome in India. The step is in line with a previous report that suggested UC Browser was stealing user sensitive data and sending it back to remote servers in China without user's consent.

The best example of this is Alibaba who is the company that's in charge of UC Browser.

Sock Overcomes Cilic to Record First ATP World Tour Finals Win
The 25-year-old Sock fell behind 4-3 in the tiebreak but produced four straight points to win the match and improve to 3-0 all-time against Cilic.

This privacy issue came to light in August at which time some publications sought clarification from UC Web. Unfortunately, nefarious apps can also ask for these permissions which allows them to intercept and steal user data. It might very well be that the government might have approached Google on the issue asking for a ban. If the developers are unable to convince the search giant within 30 days of receiving the mail, their apps will be removed from the Play Store. At least this is the case here in India.
