In February 2016, Lindsey McFarland became the first woman to receive a uterus transplant in America.

A news conference was scheduled Monday to discuss the Dallas baby's birth.
As of a year ago, the Swedish doctor who was the first in the world to deliver a baby as a result of a womb transplant had delivered five babies from women with such transplants, the AP reported.
The baby was born last month to a mother who had been born without a uterus, and received a transplant at Baylor University Medical Center, last September as part of an ongoing study. As of past year, he had delivered five babies from women with donated wombs.
The Cleveland Clinic performed the first uterus transplant in the United States in February 2016, but the patient developed complications and the organ was removed.
Doctors hope that womb transplants will enable as many as several thousand women born without a uterus to bear children.
The women selected for the study had to be healthy with working ovaries. It begins with in vitro fertilization, so that the eggs can frozen until they're ready to attempt pregnancy, and then the transplantation of the donated womb and cervix into the patient. A baby resulting from a uterine transplant would be delivered by cesarean section.
The surgeries differ from other transplants in one major way: They're not meant to be permanent. The woman suffered from Absolute Uterine Factor Infertility, a type of infertility affecting approximately 1 in 500 women, where the uterus is non-functioning or nonexistent.
The Dallas birth is "another important milestone in the history of reproductive medicine", the American Society for Reproductive Medicine said in a statement Friday, the AP reported. While three have been unsuccessful and one woman is now pregnant, the remaining four women are in different stages of the transplant process, and doctors say the baby offers them hope. The group is convening experts to develop guidelines for programs that want to offer this service.
