Schumer and Pelosi will meet with Trump after canceling previous meeting

In a statement Monday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, said they would travel to the White House Thursday to meet with Trump and GOP Hill leaders to discuss the spate of year-end issues that need to be resolved.

The on-again, off-again meeting between President Donald Trump and the top two congressional Democrats is back on, ahead of a Friday deadline to avoid a government shutdown. But they will need some Democratic support to get the spending bill past Senate procedural hurdles that require 60 votes, since there are only 52 Republicans in the 100-member chamber.

While meeting with McConnell and Ryan later that day, Trump left two chairs empty with Schumer and Pelosi's names in front of them.

Schumer and Pelosi issued a joint statement Monday, saying they were glad the White House requested a second meeting.

The Oval Office sit-down will come after Pelosi of California and Schumer of NY pulled out of a planned meeting on November 28 after Trump tweeted, "I don't see a deal!"

Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Sen. Also on the agenda would be other year-end matters, including protection from deportation for undocumented immigrants brought to the children, hurricane disaster aid and an extension of the expired Children's Health Insurance Program. "Given that the president doesn't see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead", they said.

The prospect of a shutdown is nothing new to Americans in recent years: The government was shuttered for 16 days in 2013 following a fight over funding for the Affordable Care Act. The last time the government shut down with one political party having unified control was under former President Jimmy Carter in 1979. The government is expected to run out of funds on December 8th and new funding bill needs to be passed.

McConnell, meanwhile, has been dismissive about the prospect.
