Children Who Were Spanked More Likely to Be Violent Partners Study

It's a decision many parents grapple with: should you spank your kids?

Directed by Jeff Temple, a partner teacher at University of Texas, the investigation analyzed 758 individuals in the vicinity of 19 and 20 years of age, finding that the individuals who got physical train from their folks submitted "dating violence" at a higher rate, CNN revealed Tuesday. Nearly two-thirds said they were spanked as kids, and 19 percent of them admitted to dating violence. They asked them about their childhood experiences, physical abuse and their current experiences with dating violence.

Those who were given corporal punishment as children are 29% more likely to extend that abuse into their dating life, a new study from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston says. Nineteen percent of study participants reported having acted violently in a dating situation (and that's just the reported stats). "Corporal punishment is frightening and detrimental to a child", she says.

"There's a propensity for grown-ups who have been spanked to state 'I turned out fine and dandy, ' " Temple said.

"Common sense and scientific research both tell us that children learn from their parents", Temple continued.

In fact, global estimates suggest that a whopping 80 percent of children worldwide experience physical punishment - a pretty staggering figure to be sure.

Sounds like the status quo of most A-list actors/singers/athletes, and the " Suits " actress probably knows exactly what she's signing up for.

Other researchers have found evidence that corporal punishment can be beneficial, however. The researchers found a "significant positive association" between spanking and committing dating violence as adults, even after they controlled for things like sex, ethnicity, age, parents' education, and childhood physical abuse.

"They might see that as an OK way to resolve conflicts in their adolescent relationships or their adult relationships", Dr. Temple said.
