Looks like Apple is not yet ready to bid farewell to LCD.
Alongside this metal-backed iPhone, the source claims Apple is tentatively planning two new OLED handsets, one of which would be around 5.8 inches (like the iPhone X, which is now Apple's only OLED phone) and one of roughly 6.3 inches. Pegatron and Wistron may be tasked with building the cheaper 2018 iPhone, while Foxconn is likely to win the contract for the more expensive OLED models.
The LCDiPhone, meanwhile, will cost between $650 and $900. Today's report says, however, that next year's 6.1-inch iPhone will "likely sport a metal back that will come in several colors".
A different source disclosed that Casetek is already trying out new casings for the LCD model in hopes that it would be chosen to supply the back case for the 6.1-inch iPhone. Apple's new iPhone will also revert to aluminium chassis that means that no wireless charging will be offered.
We're still a ways off from Apple introducing next year's iPhones, so this report should be taken with a grain of salt at this point. Its screen will not be equipped with Force Touch feature. This is in line with what noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities has said. "We think the specs of 6.5" OLED and 5.8" OLED new iPhones are mostly the same as those on iPhone X (5.8" OLED), except for the screen size and the support of dual physical SIM cards of the 6.5" iPhone".
NIkkei's report does not mention the design of the phones' front panel.
Nomura has claimed that the 2018 iPhoneLCD model will share the same edge-to-edge display that the current iPhone X boasts.
Kuo has also claimed that the 6.1-inch iPhone would come with a lower-resolution display.
