The average American consumes over 34 pounds of cheese a year, though some shy away from eating the dairy product due to its high-fat content which has been known to contribute to higher cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease. On the contrary, people in the study who took advantage of cheese benefits by eating a little each day were less likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke, when compared to those who rarely eat cheese. It could be that people who eat cheese on a daily basis are healthier overall, or have more disposable income and higher socioeconomic statuses. Researchers from China and the Netherlands found that people who ate small amounts of cheese daily were less likely to have strokes or develop heart disease than people who abstained or ate cheese rarely.

While low-fat dairy products are considered more favorable than high-fat dairy products by federal nutrition guidelines, the meta-analysis found limited evidence that high-fat dairy could increase the risk of CVD, CHD, or stroke compared to low-fat dairy. In 2015, the population of the United States consumed the equivalent of of cheese per person, with Cheddar and mozzarella being the most popular choices. This basically means that higher quantities of cheese aren't necessarily better.

Yet exceeding moderate portions of cheese won't boost benefits, and may in fact trigger negative health conditions, experts warn. 40 grams of cheese is a roughly the size of a matchbox and slightly more than an ounce serving.
