UN political chief meets North Korean vice foreign minister
An experimental test conducted in 2014 by Northrop Grumman shed more light that U.S.' F-35 fighter jet could prove to be an effective weapon against the threat of a North Korean-launched ballistic missile, reports said. According to the report, the best chance the US has in intercepting a ballistic missile is when it is on, or leaving the launch pad.
But US intelligence sources reportedly said they knew three days in advance and watched the missile preparation. The new route avoided the northern part of the Sea of Japan, the spokesperson said. Tokyo is planning to acquire missiles capable of reaching North Korea, then the Japanese will rely on their own strength and not on the help of allies.
The missile was far from the plane, and the plane's operation was unaffected, Cathay said, adding it had informed other carriers and relevant authorities.
It hadn't previously announced the changes before this week.
A Japan Airlines spokesman told the BBC that as of Thursday, all routes were deemed "safe to operate", but they were "prepared to implement any route changes as needed".
The most recent incident was when the crew of Cathay Pacific and Korean Air spotted the Hwasong 15 missile launched last week by North Korea. "We remain alert and [will] review the situation as it evolves".
The ICBM was sacked on a lofted trajectory rather than a minimum energy trajectory, putting more structural stress on the missile's re-entry vehicle but reducing the duration and intensity of temperature-based stresses.
European airlines Lufthansa and Air France-KLM shifted their paths in August after two North Korean test launches in July.
North Korea has long objected against joint drills by the two allies, with Pyongyang's ambassador to the United Nations ruling out negotiations with Washington in November, citing America's "hostile policy" against his country and continuing joint exercises.
