Flames from the Thompson fire were within half a mile of the Santa Barbara County line by 1 a.m. Thursday and moving fast toward the north, and areas that had been issued an evacuation warning about four hours earlier were placed under mandatory evacuation orders.
Almost 30,000 people are under evacuation orders for the fire. Overnight, elderly patients were evacuated in wheelchairs from Ojai Valley Community Hospital in downtown Ojai. The California Highway Patrol reopened the southbound side of the 101 about 6:45 a.m.; patrol vehicles were escorting traffic along the coastal stretch. An evacuation shelter was opened at UC Santa Barbara's Multi Activity Center, 516 Ocean Road.
Animal Evacuations: Those needing assistance evacuating large animals, livestock and small pets were advised to call the Santa Barbara County Animal Services hotline at 866-387-8911.
"People are losing their houses and everything that they've put their hearts into", said John Huttenberger, Ventura County resident."It's sad to see that someone has put so much time and love into something to have it ripped away like that".
More than 2,500 firefighters are assigned to the fire.
But those vicious Santa Ana winds flared up again with a vengeance Wednesday night.
Southern California has felt yellow wind, orange wind, and red wind.
The color-coded system showing the expected strength of the winds driving the region's fierce wildfires has reached uncharted territory, pushing past red, which means "high" into the color that means "extreme".
