Could Trump fire Mueller? It wouldn't be easy
We understand that we will take criticism from all corners.
FBI Director Christopher Wray headed to Capitol Hill on Thursday and defended his agency publicly for the first time since President Trump denigrated it on Twitter last weekend.
"After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters - worst in History!"
Those comments from Wray - and his split from Trump about the reputation and standing of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - set the tone for a hearing, like many others this year, starkly divided along party lines. "We're accustomed to that", he said.
His defence of the FBI came after the committee's chairman, Republican Representative Bob Goodlatte, said he was concerned by reports about Peter Strzok, a veteran counterintelligence agent involved in the Hillary Clinton investigation, being removed from Mr Mueller's team last summer following the discovery of text messages seen as potentially anti-Trump.
Recently, the FBI found itself entangled in a scandal concerning Trump's possible ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential elections and an investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of a private server for her government email.
Details from the charging documents related to former national security adviser Michael Flynn's plea deal and Trump's recent tweets have given fresh life to questions about obstruction of justice related to the president's decision to fire Comey, Wray's predecessor.
"Report: "ANTI-TRUMP FBI AGENT LED CLINTON EMAIL PROBE" Now it all starts to make sense!" "But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness", Trump tweeted Sunday.
Since then, Republicans in Congress have latched on to the Strzok case as they pressed the FBI and the Justice Department over the independence of their investigations.
Trump and his allies have "sought to undermine any institution that posed any challenge to him", said Tapper on CNN's "The Lead".
"If you kicked everybody off Mueller's team who are anti-Trump, I don't think there would be anybody left", said Republican Congressman Jim Jordan.
