Liberia court says presidential runoff vote can go ahead

Liberia court authorises presidential runoff with conditions
The ruling Unity Party and opposition Liberty Party had alleged irregularities and fraud tainted the results of the first round of voting on Oct 10 and called for a total re-run of elections.
Liberia's Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the electoral commission to proceed with a presidential runoff delayed for a month by fraud complaints, but said the national voter registration must be corrected of anomalies first.
LP led by Mr Charles Walker Brumskine, who came third in the October 10 elections with less than 10 percent of the votes, took the lead in protesting the election results.
The two political parties alleges the October 10 elections were characterized by fraud and irregularities, and was therefore short of the minimum standards for free, fair and transparent elections.
The commission found the parties' allegations either unfounded or exaggerated and ruled it had not carried out a fraudulent election, a decision maintained upon appeal.
Associate Justice Philip Banks read the ruling on behalf of the five-man Supreme Court Bench, according to local media.

Today's ruling will determine whether Liberia will go for a runoff or a rerun of the October 10 vote.
Although a re-run was not granted Liberty Party had requested, the court did direct NEC to clean up and publish the final voter registration roll at all polling places.
It also prohibited the Chairman and members of the Board of Commissioners of NEC and other employees of commission from public utterances and pronouncements relating to any matter that may emanate from the run-off.
Previously, Liberia's Supreme Court had suspended the presidential run-off that was expected to take place November 7 between former footballer George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai pending the NEC's completion of the investigation into the Liberty Party's complaints.
