NHS hospitals advised to delay non-urgent care
12 January 2018, 03:18 | Silvia Roy
Some 7.9 million appointments were missed in 2016-17 at an average cost of £120 eachPA
Thousands of operations and procedures in England's National Health Service may be postponed until January 31 because of the influx of emergency cases.
Willett said that the delay in non-urgent operations is not a crisis, but that NHS England is responding to concerns from doctors and nurses over a surge in flu cases caused by the cold weather.
The mass winter shortage comes only months after the junior doctors strike, with medics warning that A&E departments would struggle under additional pressure.
Mr Evans said: "The quality and safety of patient care is the Trust's number one priority".
Justin Madders, the shadow health minister, said: "Patients and staff deserve better than a Health Secretary doing a "Grayling", going to ground and refusing to explain the appalling downturn in standards of care this winter".
Office workers have been volunteering to help out colleagues in hospitals and GP practices by taking on administrative and cleaning roles over the next five days.
Some ambulance services have also started asking 999 callers with less serious problems to make their own way to hospital, patients are being put on mixed sex wards and hospital's are bringing Global Positioning System into A&E to help deal with patients.
"The NHS needs to take further action to increase capacity and minimise disruptive last-minute cancellations".
"Short-term fixes, however well meaning, will only get us so far".
There would also be more resources for ambulatory care and clinics as alternatives to hospital admissions, and a twice-daily review of all patients to facilitate discharge.
The figures do not include local NHS trusts, meaning even more staff could be earning more than the PM.
"It feels worse than the equivalent period past year".
Elsewhere, the West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust are urging everyone to think carefully before coming to the emergency department at Watford General Hospital.
Stevens, who is chief executive of NHS England, said that revellers who divert the attentions of the ambulance service and A&E staff due to overindulgence are "selfish" and called for the public to "use the NHS responsibly" all year round.
Other local health and social care organisations also provided valuable support in enabling patients who were ready to leave hospital to be cared for at home or elsewhere in the community, said Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs both St Richard's and Worthing.
