AKC Recognizes 2 More Breeds
To become eligible for AKC recognition, the kennel club requires a minimum number of dogs geographically distributed nationwide in the United States and a breed club of responsible owners and breeders.
The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje and Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen were introduced at the club's headquarters in NY, and joined the world's largest purebred dog registry that now recognizes 192 breeds. The additions are the first for the AKC since 2016. The dog originated in Europe around the 14th century and was a favorite of Dutch nobility, often seen in the paintings of the Dutch Masters.
"They're actually like a toddler that never grows up", she said, adding "they're very playful dogs".
Kooikerhondjes were trained to help hunters attract ducks into net-covered canals.

For a breed to be added, there must be at least 300 of them in the U.S.in 20 or more states.

Dog lovers on Twitter were ready for the new breeds.
The AKC admits that shelter dogs do need homes. The club notes that mixed-breed dogs compete in many events it sanctions, such as agility and obedience contests.
