A high school friend has been arrested in the murder of Blaze Bernstein, the Ivy League student killed near his home in southern California.

The body of Blaze Bernstein, 19, was found Tuesday afternoon in Borrego Park, which he had been visiting when he disappeared around 11 p.m. on January 2. Bernstein left the vehicle and entered the park.

The friend said he went with Bernstein to a neighborhood park in the city of Lake Forest on January 2 to meet up with the victim's girlfriend but stayed in the auto, the Orange County sheriff's investigator wrote in the document.

Bernstein went missing after he and a friend reportedly met up that night and later drove to the park near Foothill Ranch, about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Police identified the suspect as Samuel Woodward, 20, of nearby Newport Beach, the Orange County Register reported. Woodward apparently told police he drove Bernstein to the park but did not get out of the auto with him and left when he didn't return.

It also states that while speaking to the friend at Borrego Park on January 4, detectives noticed his hands had several small scratches and abrasions.

"On their way out of Sheriff's Headquarters, (investigators) noticed every door (the friend) had to touch on the way out of the building he pulled his jacket over his hand to prevent his hand and fingers from touching any part of the doors he touched", the affidavit stated, according to the report. He told relatives he was meeting up with his friends. Hundreds held a candlelight vigil to remember him.

"We thank God for this hard rain that exposed his grave", Bernstein's grandfather said before he choked back tears. Officials did not comment on the cause of death.

The student, Blaze Bernstein, a sophomore studying psychology, was home on winter break when he was last seen the night of January 2 after a friend drove him to a park in Lake Forest.

About 25 sheriff's deputies searched for Bernstein in the adjacent Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the department had said. His parents reported him missing later that morning when they realized he had left the house and never returned home. Sheriffs will not go into detail on who received the search warrant nor have they publicly named a person of interest.

A spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department told PhillyVoice that the affidavit is still under seal.
