With the streaming service's The Handmaid's Talecontinuing to rack up award wins, Hulu is adding another adaptation of a literary classic to its library: Joseph Heller's novel Catch-22, which George Clooney will co-write, direct, produce, and star in.
It focuses on Capt. John Yossarian, a US Air Force bombardier who is furious because the bureaucratic rule known as Catch-22, which specifies that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers which are real and immediate is the process of a rational mind; a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly risky combat missions, but a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty.
This marks Clooney's first series regular role in decades, since he departed ER almost two decades ago.
The series landed at the streaming service following a bidding war that ensued when Paramount TV and Anonymous Content's development of the project was announced late a year ago. Richard Brown and Steve Olin will executive produce on behalf of Anonymous Content. Filming is slated to begin early 2018. It was previously adapted for the screen in Mike Nichols' 1970 film starring Alan Arkin and Orson Welles.
Idea Gets NCLT Nod for Merger With Vodafone
The merger deal worth $23 billion was proposed back in March 2017 and is now India's largest M&A deal. As stated, if DoT approves the merger, both the telcos can merge the operations.
Clooney will play Colonel Cathcart (played by Martin Balsam in the film), a commander who continues to increase the number of combat missions required before a soldier can return home.
According to Deadline, Catch-22 is the third limited series ordered by Hulu, following the high-profile 11.22.63, produced by J.J. Abrams, and the upcoming 9/11-themed series The Looming Tower.
