The audience laughs at the mention of Fox, as if it's meant as a humorous dig, but Obama goes on to argue the importance of accurate news reporting as an antidote to the current reality that too many Americans live in "a bubble" of their own biases.
In addition to Obama, other guests on the show include George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai, Tina Fey, Jay-Z and Howard Stern. With Letterman as with Dan Rather, a stripped-down interview show is an ideal landing spot for someone who's not ready to head out to pasture.
Letterman gives a attractive answer, verging on tears: "Mr. President, this is what I'm struggling with at this point in my life: I have been nothing but lucky".
The former president also possesses an apparent affinity for Letterman whose NBC "Late Night" built a strong college following with its debut in 1982, when Obama was studying political science at Columbia University. There's a bit of an awkward transition halfway through the episode, to an interview with Rep. John Lewis in Selma, Ala., about his legacy from the civil rights movement, before flipping back to Obama in the studio (it is only in his mini-interview with Lewis that anyone mentions President Trump). Back in 2014, he announced he was (voluntarily) retiring from hosting the Late Show.
"Those people carried me across that bridge", Obama adds. Letterman seems sincerely if belatedly in awe of what happened there. She once delivered such a sick burn to the late night host that he's still talking about it!
Some viewers may be disappointed that Letterman only asks one topical political question, framing it as a "theoretical" situation in which Russian Federation might try to influence an American presidential election.
Letterman has mostly stayed out of the public eye since leaving television more than two-and-a-half years ago.
Iranians 'finally acting' against 'brutal and corrupt' regime
Unverified footage on social media claims to show thousands marching through the western cities of Khorramabad, Zanjan and Ahvaz. Ayatollah Khamenei asserted that he will talk with Iranian nation on the recent incidents across the country, at the right time.
If you're thinking that Letterman coming out of retirement, lured to Netflix, is going to lead to something wholly new and super exciting, well, no.
You could appreciate the irony: A recent President explaining show business to a late night legend. The stunts and impassioned rants go viral, and the celebrity chatter is so formulaic that Comedy Central's Nathan For You just turned "the talk show anecdote" into a metaphysical satire.
And while he clearly tries to keep the focus on Obama (and Clooney as well), it's nearly more interesting to see Letterman's own continued change. That's less clear now, as, on one hand, the dignity of the Presidency has been sullied, and, on the other, the skills honed by years hosting a talk show have come to seem like the kind of credentials that might make for a good President. The next episode, featuring George Clooney, streams February 9.

Ryan Giggs interviewed for Wales job
Giggs is the first person to be formally spoken to, however, with the Daily Mail claiming that talks took place on Friday morning. Robinson was something of a mentor to both of Wales's two major players when they emerged onto the worldwide scene.
Egypt's Salah fit to face Manchester City
They will be hoping that the arrival of new defender, Virgil van Dijk will help stop Pep Guardiola's irresistible frontline. We fancy the big center-back to do just that and give Pep Guardiola's side their first loss of the Premier League season.
