Shasta County man confesses in TV interview to 1993 cold case murder

According to KRCR-TV, 44-year-old Brian Hawkins visited its Redding station Tuesday and said he wanted to confess to the 1993 killing of 19-year-old Frank McAlister.

He said he reached out to McAlister's family previous year to ask for forgiveness and vowed to confess to the crime.

Authorities soon found his auto and immediately suspected foul play, as a large amount of blood was found inside.

McAlister's remains were not found until the following year, Fox News reported.

After the interview, Hawkins went to the Shasta County Sheriff's office to meet with police investigators, the Redding Police Department said.

Redding Police Captain Eric Wallace told the television station one of the Culvers also confessed but did not want to say which one. "I've been through hell my whole life because of this".

Hawkins expressed remore while talking to KRCR.

Hawkins described the weight of the guilt he has felt.

Horrible, horrible, horrible, absolute horror, absolutely horrible since that day. "Every minute of every day has been a nightmare", Hawkins said in the interview. "Frank never got to have a life, but we were teenagers and now I'm 44 and still haven't even had a life and now most likely won't anyway".

Unable to bear the guilt, he said could no longer live with the knowledge that he had been involved in a homicide and that his faith in God commanded him to come forward.

The Redding Record Searchlight reported that Hawkins met with Redding police on Tuesday.

Hawkins and Curtis Culver are being held on $1 million bail, while the other Culver sibling is being held without bail.

After giving the stunning interview, Hawkins then walked next door and handed himself into police, before turning in two alleged accomplices - his ex-girlfriend and her brother.

Then, Hawkins showed up at the KRCR studio. He said he wanted people to know he was remorseful.

Hawkins told the news station that he did not know McAlister before the homicide. He then met with Redding police detectives, to whom he made his official confession. McAlister had a large amount of cash that the trio wanted to steal to buy methamphetamine, Hawkins said.

McAlister was believed to have come into money from a settlement before he was killed. McAlister was ultimately stabbed to death, at which point the three ditched his vehicle at a nearby Costco.

Hawkins said he seeks forgiveness. Police arrested the Culver siblings on Wednesday in Red Bluff, officials said. Like Hawkins, they were ultimately charged with McAlister's murder. According to Hawkins' KRCR interview, he searched out McAlister's family and tried to own up to his actions on numerous occasions, but it just never happened. He and two others have since been arrested in connection with the crime. "I just hope the community can also forgive me".

"It is such a shock to us", Rice told the newspaper.

Now, almost 25 years later, Hawkins finally provided authorities with the break they couldn't obtain on their own.

Douglas McAlister died in October.

Investigators said that Hawkins' confession was their first big break in the case.
