Customers line up to get into Sam's Club in Sylmar as the store offers discounts ahead of its closing
The new employee benefits would affect more than 1 million employees at Walmart US, Sam's Club, in e-commerce and other departments, the company said.
The news comes on the same day that Walmartannounced it was boosting its minimum hourly wage for its USA employees to $11 and dishing out bonuses ranging from $200 on up to $1,000 for employees with 20 or more years with the company. The Mount Olive location has also been erased from the Sam's Club website. Sam's Club did not immediately reply to a request for comment. And in his note, Furner confirmed that the first of the stores to transition into a distribution center will be in Memphis.
Additional reporting contributed by USA TODAY's Charisse Jones.
Once commenter even stated that her son had just been hired at the Budd Lake location and was only two weeks into training as of today.
All full and part-time hourly associates in the US are eligible for the bonus, which will be based on length of service up to $1,000 for those with at least 20 years of employment. Previously, birthing mothers got six to eight weeks at half pay. As of December, the average pay for full-time workers was $13 an hour.
The changes in parental leave put salaried and hourly workers on the same footing.
The company also plans to pay $2,000 bonuses this spring to about 60,000 hourly and salaried USA employees.
Although Wal-Mart's move lifts its overall starting USA wage from $10 an hour (after workers take a training course), the increase matches what's already the minimum wage in California.
