Yet, while President Trump's opponents were gleeful and the police relieved that they would not have to mount a security operation like no other, the fragile state of UK-US relations should be a wider source of concern.
"It seems he's finally got the message". He said there would have been "mass peaceful protests", adding: "This reinforces what a mistake it was for Theresa May to rush and extend an invitation of a state visit in the first place".

Trump said on Twitter he canceled the visit because the US embassy's former location was sold at a "bad deal".
Facebook groups organizing for Trump's planned February visit called for one of the largest protests Britain had ever seen.
Thomas Cole, head of policy for the cross-party, pro-EU group Open Britain, said Trump was "showing early signs of panic here [and is] perhaps less committed to a bilateral [trade] deal with United Kingdom than some had thought".
Former UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage, who has been mainly supportive of Trump's presidency, said he was disappointed by the cancellation.
He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "It's disappointing - he has been to countries all over the world and yet he has not been to the one with whom he is closest".
Many British politicians have voiced their opposition to Trump being granted a state visit, and say the invite should be recalled.
May's spokesman told reporters Trump was welcome in London and that the invitation to visit had been accepted, although no date agreed. "We have to work with him".
