A White House spokesperson defended the comment, saying: "Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people".

Many of Trump's supporters, no doubt, would argue that is a pretty accurate description some countries and that while the president was being crude, this was just Trump cutting through all the politically correct jargon to get to the heart of the matter.

Trump took to Twitter on Friday and said "this was not the language used", though he did not specifically deny the "shithole" remark.

In a series of tweets posted a few minutes ago, Trump had argued: "The so-called bipartisan DACA deal presented yesterday to myself and a group of Republican Senators and Congressmen was a big step backwards". Another asked whether Durbin was lying about his version of the meeting.

"You've seen the comments in the press".

On Friday, Trump seemingly denied using the widely reported offensive language. It is not true.
