Turkish passenger jet nearly ends up in Black Sea after skidding off runway

An airplane on January 14 has skidded off the runway after landing in the Black Sea province of Trabzon, causing panic among passengers aboard, Hurriyet Daily News reported citing Anadolu Agency.

The Pegasus Airlines jet narrowly avoided plunging into the sea after it came to a stop on a mud bank while landing at Trabzon Airport on the Black Sea coast. The plane, belonging to private low-priced carrier Pegasus, had arrived from the capital Ankara.

The Lebanese National News Agency reported that the silver BMW belonged to Hamdan, who went by the nom de guerre Abu Hamzah. Pictures from the scene show a BMW ripped from explosion, with fire and black smoke rising into the sky.

State-run Anadolu news agency said there was panic on board as the plane went out of control before finally getting stuck in the mud, according to the BBC. All 168 passengers and crew aboard were safely evacuated with only minor injuries reported, but as the sun rose on Sunday, it became clear how close they had come to a far bigger disaster.
