Power Being Restored At CES After Outage
14 January 2018, 05:14 | Elsie Buchanan
Exhibitors have not yet put forward any complaints concerning damages caused by the power outage, nor has the show organizer officially mentioned a plan regarding the mishap.
The CES event draws tech companies from all over the world.
The association said power was restored within minutes to the 3.2 million-square-foot convention center's South Hall, where manygaming companies had exhibits, but other areas took longer - Central Hall, home to Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony, Panasonic, Intel, Qualcomm and Toshiba, among others, remained without power into the afternoon.
One of the biggest technology expositions of the year has experienced a very ironic power outage when the lights went out at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
Dozens of reporters queued quietly for lunch boxes in a darkened press room in South Hall.
There was enough light from windows and battery powered signs to safely walk around. CNET writer Jessica Dolcourt called the outage a massive failure of basic technology at an event with roughly 180,000 attendees where companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars.
"We lucked out", he said. Their initial investigation pointed to condensation caused by recent heavy rainfall which affected a transformer.
The lights went out at around 11:13AM PST after over an inch of rain fell in Las Vegas, causing flash flooding across the city. Both large and smaller ones rely on the annual trade show to ink deals that will translate to cash months in the future; the blackout disrupted some of the product demos, panels and meetings key to those deals. For some unlucky attendees, the blackout hit while their phones were inside charging stations, leaving their devices uncharged and locked out of their reach. It's amusing to see a phone held captive in what's essentially an electricity vending machine as its owner paces back and forth.
