Bomb found near London City Airport detonated under water

TAP cancels London City flights following discovery of WWII bomb

The 500-kilogram, 1.5-metre-long tapered-end shell was blown up with high-grade military detonators off the coast of Essex, where the bomb was transported earlier this week.

The unexploded Nazi bomb that closed London City Airport for more than 24 hours this week after being found during construction work was detonated by the Royal Navy after being towed out to sea.

London City, a key hub for travel to the United Kingdom capital's financial district, was forced to close Sunday after the ordnance was found in the adjoining George V dock.

KFC is also giving digital and social fans a way to spread the love by partnering with Tenor, a mobile GIF search engine. KFC has released new fried chicken scratch "n" sniff Valentine's Day cards to show your loved ones how much you care.

Robert Sinclair, CEO of London City Airport, added: "Monday's events caused a lot of disruption, not least for our local residents and passengers, but flights returned to normal on Tuesday".

A navy spokeswoman confirmed to Business Insider that the explosion took place just after midday. Police evacuated the area while divers worked to remove the bomb, described by the MoD as the biggest type most commonly dropped by the Luftwaffe. This makes it hard to establish exactly how many are dealt with each year as the data is not collected centrally.

It estimates 10% of the bombs dropped over the United Kingdom did not explode during WWII.

Turkish defense minister meets United States counterpart in Brussels
But he "acknowledged the legitimate threats posed to Turkey´s national security by terrorist organisations", the statement said. Jens Stoltenberg's comments came during a news conference after a NATO Ministers of Defense meeting in Brussels.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) said since 2010 it has been involved with 450 "items of German WWII air delivered ordnance" - about 60 per year. But given the lack of data it's impossible to say how many more remain undiscovered. The ones that do appear in the headlines tend to be particularly large devices.

The bomb, measuring almost five feet long, was found buried in the dense silt abutting the runway, where it had laid dormant since it was placed there during the air raid campaigns of World War II.
