A budget request to be issued Monday by the Trump administration will call for $150 million to be spent on the ISS in the 2019 fiscal year, and more in succeeding years, "to enable the development and maturation of commercial entities and capabilities which will ensure that commercial successors to the ISS. are operational when they are needed".
The Trump administration wants to turn the International Space Station into a kind of orbiting real estate venture run not by the government, but by private industry.
The budget proposal provides almost $10 billion to support human space exploration of the moon.
"We are leveraging multiple partners both here at home and internationally in developing a sustainable approach where the Moon is simply one step on our truly ambitious long term journey to reach out farther into the solar system to reap the economic, societal, and expanding knowledge benefits such an endeavour will bring", Lightfoot added. And astronauts will launch on a mission around the moon, using the agency's Orion capsule and Space Launch System megarocket, in 2023.
It was not clear, however, how private companies might profit from taking over the aging station, its first section was launched in 1998. Senator Bill Nelson is blasting the proposed budget.
Almost half of the proposed $19.9 billion budget - $10.5 billion - is earmarked for "an innovative and sustainable campaign of exploration and lead the return of humans to the Moon for long-term exploration and utilisation followed by human missions to Mars and other destinations", according to a NASA overview. Five Earth science programs were also cancelled as well as a deep space telescope.
NASA's Office of Education also gets the axe. And there may be some changes coming, if the reaction of US Sen.
The spacewalk will be the 208th in support of space station assembly and maintenance and the third in 2018. "Turning off the lights and walking away from our sole outpost in space at a time when we're pushing the frontiers of exploration makes no sense".
