Trump Administration: Food box instead of food stamps

Trump Administration: Food box instead of food stamps

The Trump administration has proposed a drastic change to the SNAP program, which would slash food stamps benefits for millions of people and families, and replace them with "Harvest Boxes".

Instead of fresh fruits and vegetables, the program would prioritize canned goods. Is this the best way to balance our budget?

Wilson says that change would impact food banks because they are already providing food to so many families in need.

The Trump Administration is proposing major changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in its federal budget plan. It would give all households receiving more than $90 a month in cash a food-aid package that would include items such as shelf-stable milk, peanut butter, cereal and meat.

Lloyd's and Kanye West make settlement in $10 million lawsuit
The case was dismissed by a California judge based on requests from lawyers on both sides. Kanye West just resurfaced on Instagram and has more personal news to celebrate.

That would mean the US government would have a say in what 17 million people are eating.

The White House said the plan would save the USA almost $130 billion over 10 years, and reduce the potential for EBT fraud.

"Overall I think we need to look at an individuals situation".

She said the proposal, if enacted, "would be devastating for the one-in-eight Americans who use SNAP to put food on the table every day".

What direct rule in Northern Ireland means for the UK
The Irish and British governments say they're continuing to discuss a way forward, after the collapse of the talks. Two days ago the British and Irish prime ministers raised the prospect of the stalemate ending soon.

Trump's administration believes states can provide the food packages cheaper than what SNAP clients pay for food at stores, saving more than $120 billion over the next decade.

The box would cut the current monthly monetary SNAP component in half, leaving the remaining funds to be spent as the recipient sees fit. The benefit represents about $1.40 per meal, according to Hunger Free Colorado public policy director Katharine Ferguson.

A North Carolina State University researcher concerned with food stamps and nutrition said the proposal leaves unanswered questions about the nutritional value of the food the government would send. Right now, this is just a budget proposal that would have to be approved by Congress.

States would have flexibility in how they choose to distribute the food to SNAP recipients. Plus, it could be hard for families to pick up the box, especially if they don't have a vehicle.
